![]() The surprisingly decent game Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds has the run up to a boss level when playing as Faith in an abandoned mine guiding the player through an area with a suspicious amount of pickups. If a free, re-spawning extra life appears right after a checkpoint, chances are the next segment isn't going to be pretty. It's not necessarily limited to Boss Battles Suspicious Videogame Generosity may occur before the Death Course or any other noticeably difficult segment. Bonus Dungeons tend not to feature these before the Superboss, as they're intended to be extra-challenging. Also prevents the player from having to backtrack through the dungeon to heal themselves up to full. The game designers are being nice and giving you a chance to gear up and heal up before The Unpronounceable One eviscerates you and sticks your head over its mantle. In the next room, they're going to need all of this, as they're about to get their ass kicked by a horrific Eldritch Abomination with twenty thousand hit points and whose very existence will cause the player's optic nerves to shrivel and die. So why does an experienced gamer start sweating when they come across a room full of medical supplies, armor, ammo and weapons? Why are they suspicious of this bounty? Because the gamer knows what this generosity entails. They're granted with care, and by the time you come across a little box with a red cross painted on its side, you are likely to make good use of it. Which is another reason to just use ranged weapons on them.In a well-paced game, health packs and ammo cartridges can feel like gifts from the Heavens. Knocks out on your ass even when you're visually absolutely clear of it. Just spam it, watch for one of them to pop their head out of cover, pop their head, you're golden.Įdit: And yes, the Goon's slam attack range is absolute bull. Survival Instincts (that thing you use to highlight stuff) also highlights enemies, which helps tremendously with keeping track of human enemies, especially when they're in cover. Same goes for human enemies: One headshot, they're toast. Or try two or three arrows, and if all three hit torso instead of head, go for the pistol. So instead of felling a Goon with 1-3 arrows, you'll pepper them with near 30 until they topple over. I would just recommend using a pistol over the bow, because with those brutes, the bow's auto-aim (which cannot be toggled off, as far as I am aware) sometimes flat-out refuses to aim for the head on them. Yeah, ammo is precious at least for the first ten or so levels, and the sound attracts attention - but I'd rather deal with five virals (just hop on a car and mush 'em when they climb up) than have a protracted fight with a Goon (which also creates a lot of noise). Headshots help out a lot with them (I think they're called Goons?). I don't know if I'm just doing certain missions before I'm ready or if I'm missing an essential part, but I always seem to be pausing, minimising, and going "uggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i hate this".Īnd they take a ludicrous amount of damage. I ended up crafting a DLC bow and just shooting them all which seemed like cheating to me. Not a problem when it's one or two, but 5 of them in close quarters just seemed really unfair. They are insanely hard to kill, you can't stun them when an attack happens (if you hit them with a pry bar to the face, I don't care how strong they are, they should at least recoil). The level in the school (no spoilers) has you fighting about 5 of them at once. ![]() but how have you taken three repairs worth of an upgraded hammer to the head and you're still coming? Human enemies are arguably fine, but it's how the game uses them. And they take a ludicrous amount of damage. They'll swing their hammer and I'll dodge backwards, but it'll knock me on my arse anyway. Dunno if it's just me, but the big zombies seem to be able to hit me despite not being in range. Namely against the big zombies (or whatever the generic name they have is) and human enemies. The combat is mostly satisfying, but it does bother me occasionally. May as well just pick up a random hammer, it's just as effective. I just feel like it's a bit pointless because they're going to break in 10 minutes anyway, so it's just busywork. This I find confusing as they push weapon mods constantly and suggest you craft your own weapons. The idea behind the game is that you aren't meant to look at them as weapons, but more like ammunition. Weapon degradation is particularly obnoxious here. ![]() Y'know, a nice long parkour run, standing on a car and using the stomp finishing move to crush the heads of hundreds.īut the rest of the game just annoys the hell out of me.
